I (and a bunch of other black girls like me) am super excited about the release of the May 2015 issue of ESSENCE Magazine, with a cover featuring Debbie Allen, Mara Brock Akil, Ava DuVernay, Issa Rae and Shonda Rhimes.
Y'all. The level of talent and beauty and legendary-ness and vision and inspiration boss status on this here cover. I'm beside myself. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON THIS MAGAZINE, hitting newsstands on Friday, 4/17.
That said, this week's Wordtacular Wednesday goes out to my former boss and shero, the funny, creative and beautiful Mara Brock Akil (top left on the cover). This is an excerpt from her 2013 BLACK GIRLS ROCK acceptance speech:
"Black girls and Black women, you have been and remain to be my muse. Even if nobody else sees you, I see you. I see that as much as you are strong and brave beings and bold and trend-setting, you're also lonely, scared, insecure and vulnerable. We are not perfect. But we deserve to have our picture up. Because we need to see ourselves. When we see ourselves, we are reminded of our existence, our humanity and that we are worth rooting for. We are worth protecting and we are worth loving. And, perhaps more importantly, when we see ourselves, we will not only require others, especially our men, to see us for who we really are, we will then require nothing less than respect."
